Mountain Goat Sculptures

Great Bear Ironworks has created Mountain Goat sculpture installations for two mountain locations in Northwest British Columbia.

The sculptures are made from steel using a simplified, open form that allows the surrounding landscape to remain visible through the work. Each piece is designed for its particular location and environment.

Mountain goats are built for the rugged mountains of Northwest British Columbia. They move with remarkable ease across steep rock faces, alpine slopes and narrow ledges, often appearing almost weightless against the landscape.

The sculpture takes its form from this distinctive animal and the terrain it calls home. Stripped back to a simple steel outline, the goat remains open to the landscape around it—reflecting the strength, balance and quiet presence of the animal itself.

Kalum Lookout — Terrace

The first Mountain Goat was created for Kalum Lookout above Terrace, with support from the Terrace Community Forest.

The sculpture sits within the lookout area overlooking the Skeena Valley and surrounding Coast Mountains. Its open steel form reflects the steep, rugged terrain and the Mountain Goat's natural environment.

Hudson Bay Mountain — Smithers

A second Mountain Goat was recently installed on the Round the Mountain Trail at Hudson Bay Mountain near Smithers. The project was funded by the Smithers Mountain Bike Association (SMBA).

Set among the forest and mountain landscape, the sculpture forms part of the trail experience. Its open steel construction allows the surrounding landscape to remain visible through the work, while its position along the trail gives visitors a chance to encounter it as they move through the mountain.

The two sculptures share the same subject and approach, with each designed specifically for its location.
